“First time eating pho and glad we chose this place. Not sure if they take reservations, but we had a party of 11 and were able to sit down in 10 minutes when the place was already full. People kept showing up as well, so you can trust the reviews.” Stephen

What is Poke Salad

Just one of the mysteries on the menu. Did you ever wonder what Poke, pronounced Pohkay, meant and where it came from? It’s actually a Hawaiian dish invented by fishermen. They would cut up and season some of their catch for a snack while on the boat. Very simple but original Poke!

Traditionally it is fish sliced or cut crossways into pieces. Skipjack tuna, octopus, and yellowfin tuna are basics associated with Poke. Of course, over time the ingredients have diversified and been modified. Now you’ll see raw salmon and shellfish used as well as tofu.

In Hawaii, sea salt, candlenut (from a candlenut tree), limu (edible underwater plants), and seaweed would be added to the fish.

In the United States, you’ll find a greater variety added to Poke. Soy sauce, sesame oil, Maui onions, chili pepper, and wasabi might be just a few of the ingredients.

Poke bowls vs Poke or Poke salad, have ingredients separated, and arranged in groups.

You’ll often find Poke bowls that combine carbs, proteins, veggies, and nuts. Or, contain rice or quinoa, tuna, avocado, and pickled ginger, and sesame seeds. Add to this many, many seasonings and other tasty bits, and you’ve made today’s version of Poke.

Here is the Pho V Noodle House & Sushi take on a modern Hawaiian Poke Salad: Assorted sashimi and seaweed tossed in eel sauce, wasabi cream, and spicy mayo. And then topped off with avocado, sesame seeds, and black caviar.
